Stuff to Know for the Second Midterm

You are responsible for all of the material that we have covered in lecture.  Thus, you should find the appropriate sections in the chapters that discuss

transcription, translation, gene expression, and DNA technology to be helpful.

You are not responsible for the material in Chapters 8 and 9.

Chapter 21

Pay special attention to

    - organ systems of vertebrates. Know their function. (p. 472-473)

    - the structural organization of animals p 482

Chapters 22 - 27

In each of these chapters you are responsible for the information found in two places in the chapter.

    (1) The section entitled "Biology and Society" that occurs at the beginning of each chapter and

    (2) The section entitled "Evolution Connection" that occurs at the end of each chapter.

We will address some of the issues that are discussed in these chapters as we examine the diversity of life.

Genes to Phenotype

I found an interesting website from the University of Utah (one of my alma maters) on genetics

http://gslc.genetics.utah.edu/units/basics/index.cfm

I suggest that you examine the links on because they relate directly to some of the things we talked about in class.

    Tour of the basics

    The Cell

    Build a DNA molecule

    Transcribe and translate a gene

    Discover how proteins function

    What makes a firefly glow?

The other links are pretty interesting so you can look at them if you are interested in some free learning.

Taxonomy and Classification

Here is a link to a section on Scientific Classification and Scientific Names that I have included in a book that I am writing about the Natural History of San Solomon Springs.  Take a look and see if this makes any sense to you (I would be happy to get any feedback).
